But maybe you are wondering what Maundy even means? Or what on earth a Tenebrae Service is?
Maundy is the English form of the Latin word meaning "commandment." Jesus' new commandment to "love one another" is the focus of Maundy Thursday.
Tenebrae comes from the Latin word for darkness, and is a religious service characterized by readings about the life of Jesus and the gradual extinguishing of candles after each, ending with the church in near total darkness as we ponder his cruxifiction and burial. Sacred music is another traditional compenent, and our incredile choir's songs add a hauntingly beautiful element.
